Tracking Madras HC IP Division Cases: Chennai + Madurai
A practical guide to finding and following IP cases in the Madras High Court IP Division, across Chennai and Madurai, using official eCourts tools, case types and neutral citations.
How-to · Madras High Court IP Division
Madras High Court IP cases are easy to lose track of. The IP Division sits in Chennai, appeals and related matters can arise at Madurai, and the case type codes are not obvious to someone used to other courts. This guide shows, step by step, how to find and follow IP cases in the Madras High Court IP Division using official sources first. Last verified October 2026.
- Source of the division: Madras High Court IP Division Rules, gazette dated 5 April 2023.
- Where to search: eCourts High Court Services, for both Chennai and Madurai, by Act, case type (such as OP(TM)IPD), number or party name.
- Citation format: Year:MHC:Number, used from 1 January 2023.
- Routine: check weekly, and daily when a matter is listed for interim relief.
01Why Madras IPD cases are hard to follow
The hard part of tracking IP cases in Madras is knowing where to look and what to type. A trademark suit, a patent appeal and a copyright matter may all sit in the same division, yet appear under different case types and different benches.
The division is new
The Madras High Court Intellectual Property Division Rules were published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette dated 5 April 2023. Madras became the second High Court in India, after Delhi, to set up a dedicated IP Division. Many older guides, case lists and habits still treat IP matters as ordinary civil or original side matters.
Two locations, one court
The Madras High Court sits at Chennai (the principal seat) and at Madurai (a permanent bench). A case can be listed at either place depending on its type and origin. If you search only one location, you can miss a matter.
Case types look like codes
IP matters carry short codes such as OP(TM)IPD for original petitions under the Trade Marks Act. If you do not know the code, party-name search is your fallback, and names are often spelled in many ways.
To track an IP case in Madras, search by Act first, then by case type, then by party name. Do all three, in both Chennai and Madurai.
02How the Madras IP Division is set up
The IP Division hears matters under the main Indian IP statutes. Reports on the gazette list the Patents Act, 1970, the Trade Marks Act, 1999, the Copyright Act, 1957, the Designs Act, 2000, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act, 2001, and the Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design Act, 2000.
Three ideas help you read a Madras IPD cause list or case status.
- Original side: suits and original petitions, such as infringement and passing off suits, are heard in Chennai.
- Appellate side: appeals against orders of the Registrar of Trade Marks, the Patent Office and similar authorities fall in the IP Division, and some appeals from district courts in southern Tamil Nadu are connected with the Madurai bench.
- Case type codes: the IPD uses codes that include the letters IPD, for example OP(TM)IPD for a trade mark original petition. Allied codes exist for other Acts.
Rule of thumb
Do not rely on a code you remember from another court. Pick the case type from the dropdown in the official eCourts tool and read what it says.
03Step by step: how to track a Madras IPD case
You can follow an IP case in Madras with free official tools. Use this sequence.
Step 1: Open High Court Services on eCourts
Go to hcservices.ecourts.gov.in and choose the Madras High Court. Pick the bench: Chennai or Madurai. Repeat the search for the second bench.
Step 2: Search by Act
The eCourts tool lets you search by Act. Choose the IP statute that applies, for example the Trade Marks Act, 1999. This is the best way to catch cases when you do not know the exact case number. It is also useful for finding every IP matter against a particular statute.
Step 3: Search by case type and number
If you know the matter, select the IPD case type (for example OP(TM)IPD), then enter the number and year. This gives you the status, the next date, the judge or bench and the orders passed.
Step 4: Search by party name
Use party name search to find matters where your client or a competitor is a party. Try short forms, full legal names and common misspellings. This is how you find infringement suits filed against your brand without your knowledge.
Step 5: Check the cause list and orders
Check the daily cause list for the IPD and read the latest order. The Madras High Court website, mhc.tn.gov.in, publishes cause lists and orders for both benches.
Step 6: Set a routine
Check weekly at minimum, and daily when a matter is listed for interim relief. Missing a hearing in an IP matter can mean an ex parte order or a lost opportunity to oppose an injunction.
Brand owners
If your real worry is somebody else's infringement or a rival mark, start with trademark opposition and brand protection in India. Court tracking is only one half of watching a brand.
04Chennai and Madurai: what to check at each
Chennai and Madurai are two benches of the same High Court, but they have separate cause lists and separate searches.
- Chennai: the principal seat. Original IP suits and petitions in the IP Division are heard here.
- Madurai: a bench of the Madras High Court. Check it separately for IP appeals and related matters from its territorial area.
Save two searches, one per bench, for every client name. When a matter is transferred or re-listed, it can move between locations.
For a comparison with the other well-known IP Division, see Delhi High Court IPD statistics.
05Reading Madras neutral citations: Year:MHC:Number
A neutral citation is a court-assigned reference that does not depend on any private reporter. The Madras High Court started a neutral citation system for judgments and orders uploaded from 1 January 2023.
The format is Year:MHC:Number. For example, 2023:MHC:1110 reads as the 1110th judgment or order of 2023 in the Madras High Court series. In practice you will also see a slash form, such as 2023/MHC/334.
- The number appears at the top left of each judgment or order on the official website.
- Use the same form when you cite, so the reader can find it quickly.
- A neutral citation shows the court and year, not the bench (Chennai or Madurai). Check the order text for the bench.
Orders passed before 2023 will not carry a neutral citation. Use the case number and date for those.
06Tracking tools compared
