TDS returns: online CA-assisted vs doing it yourself (India)
TDS returns are cheap to file yourself, but they are unforgiving, because they are not really about your own tax. They are about tax you deducted from other people, so a mistake affects their credit as well as your penalty exposure. For an employer or business deducting tax from salaries, vendors or rent, the quarterly return has to tie back to the challans you paid and feed the Form 16 or 16A the other party relies on. This guide explains when doing it yourself is fine and when assisted help pays for itself.
- DIY is cheap: you can file with the free RPU and FVU utilities and issue certificates from TRACES.
- TDS is unforgiving: it feeds someone else's tax credit, so errors surface as a demand and a complaint.
- Most trouble comes from wrong PANs, challan mismatch, wrong section or rate, and late filing.
- Late filing attracts interest and a section 234E fee of Rs 200 per day, capped at the TDS amount.
- Assisted helps with many deductees, mixed payment types, or a demand to clear.
- Claw Tax: a verified CA validates, prepares and files, a reviewer checks, from Rs 1,999 a quarter.
01You can file TDS returns yourself
You can prepare and file TDS returns yourself using the government utilities. You deduct tax at the right rate, deposit it with challan 281, and file a quarterly statement: Form 24Q for salaries, Form 26Q for most other resident payments, and Form 27Q for payments to non-residents. The return is prepared in the Return Preparation Utility (RPU), validated through the File Validation Utility (FVU), and filed, after which you issue Form 16 or 16A from the TRACES portal.
Do it yourself when your case is small and steady: a few deductees, standard payment types, correct PANs, and deposits made on time each month. If you are comfortable with the utilities and the deadlines, there is no reason to pay.
This is a decision guide, not tax advice
TDS rates, sections and due dates change. Confirm the current rate and section for each payment on the portal, and let a qualified professional handle the specifics where your case is not simple.
02Where DIY TDS filing goes wrong
TDS mistakes are common because small errors create a mismatch that the system flags automatically.
- Wrong or missing PAN of the deductee: this attracts a higher deduction rate and a demand, and the deductee cannot claim the credit.
- Challan mismatch: the tax you deposited does not tie to what you reported, so the return shows a short payment.
- Wrong section or rate: deducting under the wrong section, or at the wrong rate, creates a demand and a correction cycle.
- Late deposit or late filing: interest on late deposit, a late-filing fee under section 234E of Rs 200 per day (capped at the TDS amount), and a possible penalty under section 271H.
- Form 16 or 16A errors: a wrong certificate means the other party chases you, or claims the wrong credit in their own return.
Because the return feeds someone else's tax credit, these errors do not stay quiet. They surface as a demand on you and a complaint from the deductee.
03When CA-assisted filing is worth it
Assisted filing earns its fee when the number of deductees or the mix of payments raises the risk.
- You have several employees or vendors and want PANs validated and challans matched before filing, not after a demand.
- You deduct under several sections (salary, contractor, rent, professional fees, non-resident payments) and want each rate and section right.
- You have had a demand or default notice and need corrections and justification handled.
- You issue Form 16 and 16A to many people and want them correct and on time, because errors come straight back to you.
- You keep missing the quarterly deadline and the section 234E fee is adding up.
In these cases a professional preparing and validating the return each quarter is usually cheaper than the interest, the per-day late fee and the correction cycles.
04Cost and effort compared
Set the two routes side by side on the things that actually differ.
| Factor | Do it yourself | CA-assisted (online) |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Free RPU and FVU utilities | Handled by the professional |
| Who prepares it | You | A verified professional |
| PAN and challan validation | You check it | Validated before filing |
| Risk of a demand or default | Higher with volume | Lower, with a reviewed return |
| Form 16 / 16A issue | You generate from TRACES | Prepared and checked for you |
| Service cost | Zero | Fixed, published (for example from Rs 1,999 a quarter) |
| Best for | Few deductees, steady payments | Many deductees or mixed sections |
05How Claw Tax helps
Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.
For TDS returns, you pick the service or book a free 20-minute call, pay the fixed price (TDS returns from Rs 1,999 a quarter), and a verified partner CA validates deductee PANs, matches your challans, prepares the right form (24Q, 26Q or 27Q) at the correct section and rate, and files the quarterly statement. A Claw reviewer checks it before submission, the Form 16 or 16A is generated correctly, and you get reminders before each quarterly due date. See the current service and price at clawlaw.in/tax.
TDS usually sits next to payroll and GST, which carry the same decision: see payroll: CA-assisted vs doing it yourself and GST returns: CA-assisted vs doing it yourself.
06Frequently asked questions
Can I file TDS returns myself?
Yes. You can prepare the quarterly statement in the free Return Preparation Utility, validate it with the File Validation Utility, file it, and issue Form 16 or 16A from TRACES, all yourself. It is practical for a small deductor with few deductees and standard payments. It gets harder with many deductees, several sections, or a demand to resolve.
Which TDS return form do I file?
It depends on the payment. Form 24Q is for TDS on salaries, Form 26Q is for most other payments to residents (such as contractors, rent and professional fees), and Form 27Q is for payments to non-residents. Each is filed quarterly, and filing the wrong form or under the wrong section creates a mismatch, so confirm the right form and section for each payment.
What is the penalty for filing a TDS return late?
A late TDS return attracts a fee under section 234E of Rs 200 for each day of delay, capped at the amount of TDS, plus interest on any late deposit of the tax itself. There can also be a penalty under section 271H in some cases. Confirm the current figures, but the practical point is that the per-day fee adds up quickly, so on-time filing matters.
Why does a deductee PAN error cause problems?
If the deductee PAN is wrong or missing, tax is deducted at a higher rate, a demand is raised on you, and the deductee cannot see or claim the credit in their Form 26AS. Because TDS is tax you deducted from someone else, a PAN error creates a problem for both sides, which is why validating PANs before filing is a core part of the work.
What does a TDS return service cost?
There is no government fee to file; you pay only a service fee. Services publish quarterly fees, for example Claw Tax lists TDS returns from Rs 1,999 a quarter. Confirm the current price and what the fee includes, such as PAN validation, challan matching and the Form 16 or 16A, before you buy.
Who needs to file TDS returns at all?
Any person or business that is required to deduct tax at source, for example an employer paying salary, or a business paying contractors, rent or professional fees above the threshold, must deposit the tax and file a quarterly TDS return. Whether a particular payment attracts TDS depends on the section and the threshold, so confirm the position for each payment type.
