PAN Aadhaar Link Last Date (India, 2026)

The headline date to link PAN with Aadhaar passed some time ago, but that does not mean the matter is closed, because you can still link late with a fee, and a separate deadline applies to some newer PANs. This guide explains the last dates, what an expired deadline means for your PAN, and how to make an inoperative PAN work again.

In short
  • Free deadline: passed on 31 March 2022; the fee window ended 30 June 2023.
  • No fresh free window: you can still link now, but with the Rs 1,000 fee.
  • Enrolment ID PANs: a separate notified deadline applies to PANs issued via an Aadhaar enrolment ID.
  • Inoperative PAN: refunds held, higher TDS, and disrupted services until you link.
  • Late fee: Rs 1,000 under section 234H, paid through e-Pay Tax, as notified.
  • Reversible: an inoperative PAN becomes operative again after you link.

01The last date, in plain terms

The general deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar without a fee passed on 31 March 2022, and the final window with a fee ended on 30 June 2023. Since then, a PAN that was not linked has been treated as inoperative.

Importantly, there is no fresh free window. You can still link now, but a late fee applies, and the practical message is simple: if you have not linked, do it, because every day unlinked is a day your PAN may not work as it should.

02Special deadline for Aadhaar enrolment ID PANs

There is a separate rule for people who were allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID rather than the Aadhaar number itself, for applications made before 1 October 2024. The tax department notified that such people must intimate their actual Aadhaar number by a specified date, as notified.

If this applies to you, check the current notified date on the official portal and link before it, because the same inoperative consequences follow if you miss it.

03What an expired deadline means

When the deadline has passed and your PAN is inoperative, several everyday things get harder.

  • Refunds are withheld while the PAN stays inoperative, and no interest is paid on a refund for that period.
  • Higher TDS and TCS can be deducted on your income, because an inoperative PAN is treated like no PAN for deduction rates.
  • Filing and other services tied to the PAN can be disrupted.

None of this is a penalty beyond the fee; it is the system treating an inoperative PAN as if it is not valid until you link.

04The late fee

Linking after the deadline carries a late fee under section 234H, of Rs 1,000, as notified. You pay it through the e-Pay Tax service on the income tax portal before you submit the link request.

StagePosition
Up to 31 March 2022Linking was free
1 April 2022 to 30 June 2023Linking with a fee
After 30 June 2023PAN inoperative if unlinked; link with the Rs 1,000 fee

05Making an inoperative PAN operative

An inoperative PAN is not cancelled; it can be made operative again by linking.

  1. Pay the Rs 1,000 late fee through e-Pay Tax, as notified.
  2. Submit the link request with your PAN and Aadhaar, after the fee reflects against your PAN.
  3. Wait for the link to process; the PAN becomes operative again within the time the department notifies.

An inoperative PAN is paused, not dead. Pay the fee, link, and it works again, usually within a short processing time.

06How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

Linking after the deadline is a free-to-learn, do-it-yourself task on the government portal; the only real cost is the Rs 1,000 fee. Claw Tax is for when your PAN has already gone inoperative and held up a refund, your details do not match across PAN and Aadhaar, or you want it handled start to finish.

A verified chartered accountant can pay the fee correctly, fix any mismatch, submit the link, and confirm your PAN is operative, at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking the work. See the services and prices at clawlaw.in/tax.

This is general information, not tax advice; a verified CA handles the specifics of your case.

07Frequently asked questions

What is the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar?

The free deadline passed on 31 March 2022 and the final fee window ended on 30 June 2023. There is no fresh free window; you can still link now by paying the Rs 1,000 late fee. A separate notified date applies to PANs issued using an Aadhaar enrolment ID, so confirm the current position on incometax.gov.in.

Can I still link PAN and Aadhaar after the deadline?

Yes. Even though the deadline has passed, you can link by paying the late fee of Rs 1,000 under section 234H through e-Pay Tax and then submitting the link request. Linking also makes an inoperative PAN operative again, usually within a short processing time.

What is the special deadline for PANs issued using an Aadhaar enrolment ID?

People allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID, for applications before 1 October 2024, were asked by the tax department to intimate their actual Aadhaar number by a specified date, as notified. If this applies to you, check the current notified date on the official portal and link before it.

What happens to my PAN if I missed the linking deadline?

An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative. While inoperative, refunds are withheld with no interest for that period, tax can be deducted from your income at a higher rate, and PAN-linked services can be disrupted. The PAN is not cancelled; linking it, after paying the fee, restores it.

How much is the late fee for linking after the deadline?

The late fee is Rs 1,000 under section 234H, as notified. You pay it through the e-Pay Tax service on the income tax portal before submitting the link request. Wait for the payment to reflect against your PAN, then link.

How long does it take for an inoperative PAN to become operative?

After you pay the fee and submit the link request, the link takes some time to process and the PAN becomes operative again within the time the department notifies. Check the Link Aadhaar Status on the portal to confirm, and avoid resubmitting while a request is already in progress.
