Income Tax Return Filing Charges (India, 2026)

There is a lot of confusion about what it costs to file an income tax return, because several different charges get mixed up: the government fee (there is none to self-file), what a chartered accountant charges for doing it, the penalty for filing late, and the fee to file an appeal. This explainer separates them so you know exactly what you are paying for and when.

Quick reference
  • Self-filing: free on the government portal (incometax.gov.in). There is no government fee to file your return.
  • CA or service fee: a professional charge that rises with complexity, from a few hundred rupees for a simple salaried return to more for capital gains or business income.
  • Late filing fee (234F): a government penalty for filing after the due date, broadly up to Rs 5,000 (lower for income below a threshold), plus interest on unpaid tax.
  • Appeal fee: a separate, modest government fee in slabs linked to assessed income; the real cost is professional representation.
  • Section numbers may change: the Income-tax Act 2025 is replacing the 1961 Act; confirm current references and amounts for your year.

01Filing it yourself is free

The most important fact first: the government does not charge you to file your income tax return. Filing on the official e-filing portal at incometax.gov.in is free, whether you use the online utility or the offline JSON utility.

So any "income tax return filing charges" you are quoted are a professional's fee for preparing and filing on your behalf, not a government charge. If your return is simple, for example a single salary and a Form 16, you can file it yourself at no cost. For the documents you will need either way, see documents required for ITR filing.

02What a CA typically charges

When you pay a chartered accountant or an online service, the charge depends on how complex your return is. More income types, capital gains, business income and foreign assets all add work and cost. Indicative ranges in the market:

Type of returnTypical complexityIndicative professional fee
Salaried, single Form 16 (ITR-1)LowA few hundred to around Rs 2,000
Multiple incomes, house property, deductionsModerateAround Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000
Capital gains (shares, property)HigherAround Rs 2,500 upwards
Business or professional incomeHigherVaries with turnover and books

These are market ranges, not fixed rates, and they vary by city and firm. The value you are paying for is accuracy, the right regime and deduction choices, and someone to stand behind the return if a notice comes.

03The late filing fee (section 234F)

A different charge entirely is the late filing fee under section 234F, which you pay to the government if you file your return after the due date. It is a flat fee, broadly up to Rs 5,000, reduced to a lower amount (broadly Rs 1,000) if your total income is below a notified threshold.

On top of the 234F fee, interest can run on any unpaid tax. Note that the section numbers may be renumbered as the Income-tax Act 2025 replaces the 1961 Act, so confirm the current section reference and the amounts for your assessment year. Filing on time avoids this fee entirely. For the deadline, see the income tax ITR last date.

04Income tax appeal fees

If you disagree with an assessment order and file an appeal, there is a government appeal fee, which is separate again from filing and late fees. For an appeal to the first appellate authority, the fee has broadly been structured in slabs linked to the assessed income, so a small matter costs less to appeal than a large one.

The appeal fee itself is modest; the real cost of an appeal is usually the professional fee for preparing it and representing you. Because the slabs and the appellate process can change, confirm the current fee for your income level before filing an appeal.

05When paying for help is worth it

Paying someone to file is not always necessary. A useful rule of thumb:

  • Do it yourself if you have one salary, a Form 16, standard deductions and no capital gains. The portal guides you.
  • Consider help if you have capital gains, multiple house properties, business or freelance income, foreign income or assets, or you have received a notice.
  • Definitely get help if you are choosing between the old and new regime for a complex income, or responding to the department, where a mistake is costly.

The fee you pay a professional should be weighed against the tax, interest and penalty a wrong return can cost later.

06How Claw Tax helps

Claw Tax and Accounts is an online tax, GST and accounting service for India that connects you with a verified chartered accountant at a fixed, published price, with a Claw reviewer checking every filing before it is submitted.

If your return is simple, filing it yourself on the portal is free and we would rather you do that. For everything more involved, the value of a fixed, published price is that you know the charge before you start, with no surprise billing.

With Claw Tax and Accounts ITR filing, a verified chartered accountant prepares your return, picks the right regime and deductions, and a Claw reviewer checks it before filing, all at a fixed published price (salaried returns start low). You approve the draft before it is submitted, and you get reminders before the next deadline.

This is not tax advice; a verified CA handles your specifics.

07Frequently asked questions

Is there a government charge to file an income tax return?

No. Filing your income tax return on the official e-filing portal is free, using either the online utility or the offline JSON utility. Any "filing charges" you are quoted are a professional's fee for preparing and filing on your behalf, not a government charge.

How much does a CA charge to file an ITR?

It depends on complexity. A simple salaried return with one Form 16 may cost a few hundred rupees up to around Rs 2,000, while capital gains or business income cost more. These are market ranges, not fixed rates, and vary by city and firm.

What is the late fee for filing ITR after the due date?

Under section 234F, a flat late filing fee applies if you file after the due date, broadly up to Rs 5,000, reduced to a lower amount (broadly Rs 1,000) if your total income is below a notified threshold. Interest can also run on unpaid tax. Confirm the current amounts and section reference for your assessment year.

What are income tax appeal fees?

If you appeal an assessment order to the first appellate authority, a government appeal fee applies, structured in slabs linked to your assessed income, so a smaller matter costs less to appeal. The fee itself is modest; the larger cost is usually the professional fee for preparing and arguing the appeal.

Do I need to pay someone to file my return?

Not always. If you have a single salary, a Form 16, standard deductions and no capital gains, you can file yourself for free on the portal. Paying for help makes sense for capital gains, multiple properties, business or foreign income, regime choices on complex income, or when responding to a notice.

Is the late filing fee the same as the CA fee?

No, they are completely different. The late filing fee under section 234F is a penalty paid to the government for filing after the deadline. A CA or service fee is what you pay a professional to prepare and file your return, and you pay it whether or not you file on time.
