Free Legal Help for EPF, PF And Pension Disputes in India

A lot of EPF problems can be solved without paying anyone. If your PF withdrawal was rejected, your EPFO claim is stuck, or a pension dispute will not move, there are real, official, free routes to try first. This page lists them in order, explains what each one can and cannot do, and tells you when a free route is not enough and you should move to a lawyer.

Quick reference
  • EPFiGMS: free EPFO grievance portal; the first stop for a PF withdrawal rejected on technical grounds.
  • NALSA, SLSA, DLSA: free legal aid and representation for those who qualify.
  • Lok Adalat: free, binding settlement when both sides are willing.
  • Limits: free routes cannot force a contested legal question; that needs an inquiry or appeal.
  • Move to a lawyer: for a contested employer default, a repeated refusal, or an EPF appellate tribunal appeal.
  • Claw match: free basic request or Rs 99 priority; the advocate is independent and paid directly.

01Start with the free EPFO grievance system

The single most useful free tool for an EPF dispute is the EPFO grievance system itself.

  • EPFiGMS: the EPF i Grievance Management System at epfigms.gov.in lets you raise a grievance against your EPFO office or ex-employer and track it to closure. There is no fee.
  • Refile a rejected claim: a PF withdrawal rejected for a KYC issue, a name mismatch, or a wrong exit date can usually be corrected online and refiled, again at no cost.
  • Written representation: a letter to the Regional PF Commissioner costs nothing and builds the record you will need if the matter later goes to appeal.

Keep every reference number

Save your grievance ID, the rejection reason, and all EPFO replies. If you later need a lawyer for a provident fund claim or a pension dispute, this record cuts the work and the fee.

If your EPF dispute needs a lawyer and you cannot afford one, free legal aid exists by law.

  • NALSA and the Legal Services Authorities: the National Legal Services Authority at nalsa.gov.in, with the State (SLSA) and District (DLSA) authorities, provides free legal advice and representation to those who qualify.
  • Who qualifies: eligibility includes, among others, women, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, people with disabilities, and those below an income limit. Industrial workmen and certain other categories are also covered.
  • How to apply: visit your nearest DLSA, usually located in the district court complex, or apply through the NALSA portal.

Legal aid can cover a section 7A representation or an EPF appellate tribunal matter if you qualify, so ask before assuming you must pay.

03Lok Adalat

A Lok Adalat is a free settlement forum organised under the Legal Services Authorities Act. Its award is binding and has the force of a civil court decree, and there is no court fee.

Some EPFO recovery and money matters can be taken up at a Lok Adalat if both sides are willing to settle. It will not force a result on a party that refuses, so it works best when the EPFO or the employer is open to resolving the provident fund claim rather than fighting it.

04What free help cannot do

Free routes are powerful but they have limits. Be realistic.

  • EPFiGMS can push a grievance, but it cannot force a contested legal question to be decided. That needs a section 7A inquiry or an appeal.
  • Legal aid depends on eligibility. If you do not qualify, you will need a private lawyer.
  • A Lok Adalat only works when both sides want to settle the EPF dispute.
  • A genuinely contested employer default or a repeated EPFO refusal often needs sustained legal work that free routes cannot sustain.

Before you decide, it helps to know whether your matter even needs a lawyer. See do I need a lawyer for an EPF or pension dispute.

05When to move to a lawyer

Move from free routes to a lawyer when any of these is true:

  • The EPFO has refused a valid provident fund claim even after your grievance.
  • Your employer deducted PF but did not deposit it, and recovery has stalled.
  • You need a section 7A inquiry, an EPF appellate tribunal appeal, or a writ petition.
  • A pension dispute involves a legal question, such as a denied higher-pension option.

When you get there, gather your documents first. The list is in documents needed for an EPF or pension lawyer.

06How Claw helps you find the right lawyer

Claw is an all-in-one legaltech platform for Indian advocates, law firms, and corporate legal teams, combining AI-based case search, an AI legal assistant (Legal GPT), case management, and compliance automation across all Indian courts and tribunals.

When the free routes are not enough, Claw runs a Find a Lawyer service for the public. You describe your EPF dispute or pension dispute in a short guided chat, and Claw connects you with a verified, independent advocate who handles EPFO and provident fund matters, in your state or city where possible, for an online or in-person consultation. There are two options: a free basic request, or a Rs 99 priority request for faster, prioritised matching. The free basic request itself costs nothing to use.

The advocate is independent and practises on their own. Claw does not hire, employ or empanel lawyers, is not a law firm, and is not your advocate. The advocate professional fee is paid directly to the advocate and Claw does not share it, in line with Bar Council of India Rule 36. Claw does not give legal advice. Start at Claw Find a Lawyer.

The verification technology behind this is the same that Claw builds for institutions such as banks, including case and litigation screening tools.

07Frequently asked questions

Is there a free way to fix a rejected PF withdrawal?

Yes. The EPFiGMS grievance portal is free and often resolves a PF withdrawal rejected for a KYC issue, a name mismatch, or a wrong exit date. You can also correct the detail and refile online at no cost. Use this before paying any lawyer.

Who can get free legal aid for a pension dispute?

NALSA and the State and District Legal Services Authorities provide free legal help to eligible people, which includes women, members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, persons with disabilities, industrial workmen, and those below an income limit, among others. Apply at your nearest DLSA or through the NALSA portal.

Can a Lok Adalat settle an EPF dispute?

It can settle some EPFO money and recovery matters if both sides are willing. The award is free and binding. It will not force a result on a party that refuses to settle, so it works best when the employer or the EPFO wants to resolve the provident fund claim.

What can free help not do?

Free routes cannot force a contested legal question to be decided. EPFiGMS pushes a grievance but does not adjudicate; legal aid depends on eligibility; a Lok Adalat needs both sides to agree. A genuinely contested employer default or a repeated EPFO refusal usually needs a section 7A inquiry or an EPF appellate tribunal appeal with a lawyer.

When should I stop using free routes and hire a lawyer?

When the EPFO refuses a valid provident fund claim after your grievance, when an employer default has stalled, when you need a section 7A inquiry, an EPF appellate tribunal appeal or a writ, or when a pension dispute turns on a legal question. At that point, gather your documents and find an advocate who handles EPFO matters.
