How to check the status of a case in the Central Government Industrial Tribunal-cum-Labour Court (CGIT), by case number or party name, with the list of CGIT benches and a plain glossary of status terms.

Jurisdiction · CGIT Case Status

You filed or received a labour dispute that sits before a CGIT, and now you need a simple answer: is it listed, when is the next date, and what did the last order say? The answer is not always easy to find, because the Central Government Industrial Tribunal-cum-Labour Court has about 22 benches across India, each with its own cases, and the official information is spread across the Ministry of Labour portals. This page shows the quick way to check CGIT case status, by case number or party name.

The short answer
  • What you need: the bench (city), plus the case number with year, or the party names.
  • Benches: about 22 CGIT-cum-Labour Courts across India.
  • Two ways: by case number (exact) or by party name (fallback).
  • Always confirm: check the bench cause list before the hearing day.
  • In Claw: create a free account and search CGIT by party name or case number.
  • Last verified: 6 October 2026.

01How to check CGIT case status in short

Short answer: you need the bench (city) and either the case number with year, or the names of the parties. With those, you can look the case up on the official CGIT site of the Ministry of Labour, or in a case search tool such as Claw, and read the next date, the stage, and the last order.

A CGIT hears industrial disputes that arise in the central sphere, such as disputes involving central government undertakings, banks, ports, mines and railways, under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. Because there are about 22 benches, the first thing to know is which bench holds your case.

You can also check a CGIT case in Claw. You need a free Claw account, and then you can search CGIT by party name or case number.

02Step by step: check CGIT case status

  1. Find the bench. Look at the reference order or notice. It names the CGIT-cum-LC, for example Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai or New Delhi. Some cities have more than one bench, such as Mumbai I and II or Dhanbad I and II.
  2. Collect the case details. You need the case type and number with the year. Industrial dispute references are commonly numbered as I.D. cases, and other matters carry other type codes. If you only have a party name, that works too.
  3. Open the source. Use the official CGIT site run by the Ministry of Labour, or search in Claw after you create a free account.
  4. Search. Enter case type, number and year, or the party name. Choose the right bench. Party names can be spelt in many ways, so try a short form of the name if you see no result.
  5. Read the result. Note the next hearing date, the stage (for example evidence or arguments), and the last order or award.
  6. Confirm with the cause list. Dates move. Check the bench cause list close to the hearing day.

If you track many cases

For one case, a manual check is fine. If you track many cases across forums, see the guide on how to check case status by case number in India for the general method.

03Methods to check CGIT case status

There are two main ways to look up a case, and they suit different situations.

MethodWhat you needBest whenWatch out for
By case numberBench, case type, case number, yearYou have the reference or order in handA wrong bench or wrong year gives no result
By party nameBench (if known) and the name of the worker, union or managementYou lost the number, or you track a case for a clientSpelling differences, initials and short names can hide a result

Searching by case number is the most exact. Searching by party name is the fallback, and it works better in a tool that tolerates spelling variation.

04CGIT benches across India

The Ministry of Labour lists 22 CGIT-cum-Labour Courts. Two of them, the Mumbai No. 1 bench and the Kolkata bench, also act as National Industrial Tribunals. The table below lists the benches and the areas they cover.

Choosing the right bench matters. A case filed in one bench will not appear when you search another.

05CGIT cause list

The cause list is the list of matters a bench will take up on a given day. Checking it is the best way to confirm that your case is actually listed, because a date shown in the status may be reset or the Presiding Officer may be on leave.

Each bench publishes its own daily list. Look for your case number or party name in the list, and note the item number, since it shows how soon your matter may be called. If you track a case that is also before a tax or other tribunal, the method is similar. See, for example, how to check ITAT appeal status by PAN.

06Status glossary: what the words mean

Term you may seePlain meaning
PendingThe case is still before the tribunal and no final award has been made.
ReferenceThe appropriate government has referred the industrial dispute to the tribunal for adjudication.
Claim statement / written statementThe pleadings filed by the workman side and the management side.
EvidenceThe stage where witnesses are examined and documents are proved.
ArgumentsBoth sides are making their final submissions.
Reserved / for awardHearing is over and the tribunal will pass its award.
AwardThe final decision of the tribunal on the dispute.
Ex parteThe case moved ahead because one side did not appear.
DisposedThe case is finished, by award, settlement or withdrawal.

The exact words used can differ from bench to bench. If a term is unclear, read the last order itself.

07Common problems when you check CGIT status

  • No result found. Check the bench, case type and year first. Many failed searches come from the wrong bench.
  • Old cases. Cases from many years back may not show details online in the same way as new ones. In that case, ask the bench registry.
  • Different names. The same worker or company may appear under different spellings. Try short names and initials.
  • Status looks old. A status page can lag behind the real order. Treat the cause list and the signed order as final.
  • Portal down. Government portals can be slow or offline at times. Try again later, or use another source.
